Vatter Values: Humility

One of our finished kitchens

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less” - C.S Lewis, Mere Christianity

Humility, in the truest sense, is not a false underrepresentation of one’s abilities. True humility is a fair and accurate reflection of one’s skill. It neither oversells nor undersells—it simply states reality and puts the focus on others. So what does that mean for us at Vatter Construction?

In the construction field, that means putting emphasis on who we are serving—our clients. Humility carries our responsibilities seriously. We are building someone’s home, meaning our work directly impacts how someone lives their day-to-day life. This is a sobering thought, and it calls us to a higher level of quality. A job poorly done is a family that suffers. So, we simply can’t afford to do any job poorly.

Humility, in its realism, also prevents false promises. Instead of overpromising and underdelivering to get sales, humility promises exactly what it plans to achieve, then works to deliver more. That same responsibility to others’ homes also comes into play here. The promise of a dream home for the low, low price of “not enough money to cover the materials” causes only lost money and wasted time. To care for the people you are serving, your words must be fair and grounded in truth.

This same principle bleeds into fair pricing, good communication, and quick problem-solving. All aspects of a construction project can be molded by it. By striving for humility, we can simultaneously reach quality.
